About Our Program
Shekinah Allied Healthcare Safety and Training offers quality allied-health and nursing
programs that integrate professional skills, career-focused education, and hands-on
practical experience by empowering students to develop and achieve their personal
and career goals. We are an authorized provider by the Board of Vocational Nursing and
Psychiatric Technicians (BVNPT) to offer Intravenous Therapy and Blood Withdrawal
Certification. Upon completion of this training 4 days (36 hours) training, you will be
eligible to receive board certification. 27 hours of Theory and 9 hours of clinicals. The 4-
days or a week comprehensive course will include: The history of Blood Withdrawal,
Orders, OSHA and Infection Control Protocol, blood withdrawal techniques, needle
selection and patient considerations. Once certified in IV Therapy and Blood Withdrawal,
re-certification is not necessary as long as the license remains current and does not lapse.
Course Manual is provided on the first day of class.
Course Description
- The IV course is intended for professionals who need continuing education. The course is designed to safely enable the Licensed Vocational Nurse to initiate and maintain intravenous therapy in a clinical setting.
- The course covers IV therapy, arterial puncture, and blood withdrawal. It will prepare students to do the following: recognize complications and reactions, identify the role of IV therapy, differentiate actions, dosages, side effects, nursing implications, and more.
- The non-accredited course will bring participants up-to-date knowledge and skills. This is a 36-hour course consisting of 27 hours of lecture and nine (9) hours of clinical experience. LVNs who complete the course will be certified by the California Board of Vocational Nursing and Psychiatric Technician Examiners to initiate and superimpose intravenous fluids and blood withdrawal.
- The course is three nine-hour days of didactic training on the theory behind intravenous therapy and blood withdrawal practices and principles. It also includes one nine-hour day of clinical practicum in the clinical skills lab setting.
Goals and Objectives
- Recognize the role of the Registered Nurse and the Licensed Vocational Nurse in IV Therapy and Blood Withdrawal.
- List factors that affect flow rates of IV solutions.
- Describe the proper use of specific IV therapy, arterial puncture, and blood withdrawal equipment.
- Initiate IV therapy, blood withdrawal, arterial puncture utilizing nursing precautions or patient safety by:
(a) Preparing the patient psychologically
(b) Explaining the rationale for blood withdrawal, arterial punctures, and
venipunctures.
(c) Differentiating between the types of skin puncture, venipunctures, and arterial devices and their appropriate uses.
(d) Differentiating between skin puncture, arterial puncture, and venipunctures.
(e) Distinguishing between types of intravenous solutions and their
appropriateness.
(f) Preparing equipment properly and aseptically.
(g) Selecting and correctly preparing the most appropriate vein for
venipunctures, blood withdrawal, or arterial puncture.
(h) Preparing the site in a manner that reduces the chance of infection.
(i) Performing venipunctures utilizing the direct or indirect method.
(j) Performing blood withdrawal utilizing skin puncture (vacutainer, butterfly,
syringe), arterial puncture, or venipunctures.
(k) Dressing site according to policy.
(l)Securing and immobilizing devices appropriately and safely.
(m)Regulating the flow rate and fluid accurately.
(n) Documenting on the medical records.
- Recognize complications related to blood withdrawal, arterial punctures, and venipunctures.
- Recognize local and systemic reactions related to intravenous therapy.
- List the nursing measures taken to reduce local and systemic reactions.
- Note five reasons to discontinue and restart IV devices.
- Detail the cause and differentiate clinical symptoms of electrolyte imbalances.
- Identify the role of IV therapy and pH balance.
- List the causes of pH imbalances.
- Differentiate actions, dosages, side effects, and nursing implications of specified intravenous solutions.
- Correlate the IV fluid container label with the name of the solution, as commonly ordered.
- List the usual components of Total Parenteral Nutrition (TPN).
- Identify nursing precautions relating to TPN.
- Recognize safety techniques utilized in blood transfusions.
- Recognize types of transfusion reactions.
- List nursing actions that are taken when a blood transfusion occurs.
- Examine the differences between techniques used in adult and pediatric IV therapy.
- Discuss situations related to IV therapy and legal implications.
- Describe appropriate ways of minimizing legal risks in IV therapy and blood withdrawal practice.
- Identify the safety precautions regarding administering IV fluids, withdrawing blood, and testing adequate circulation about the arterial 4 puncture site. Class schedules are subject to change. Shekinah Allied Healthcare Safety and Training might cancel the upcoming course schedule if the minimum enrollment of 15 students is not met within one week of the proposed start dates. Students who opt not to register for the following course schedule will be subject to Shekinah Allied Healthcare Safety and Training’s Continuing Education Courses Refund Policy.
NOTE: Participants must bring a volunteer to participate in the venipuncture skills check to complete the course’s clinical portion on the final day OR have another course mate for reciprocal mutual blood withdrawal.
Course Outcome:
Upon completion of the course, the student will be able to:
- Discuss the structure and function of veins.
- Identify the names and the locations of the veins most suitable for phlebotomy and cannulation/venipuncture.
- Assemble equipment and supplies needed to collect blood and cannulation/ venipuncture and discuss the correct use.
- Demonstrate the steps in performing blood collection and cannulation/ venipuncture procedures.
- Assess the techniques and equipment used to minimize biohazard exposure in blood collection and cannulation/venipuncture.
- Evaluate procedural errors in blood collection and cannulation/venipuncture and discuss remedies for each.
- Differentiate complications associated with blood collection and cannulation/ venipuncture and their effect on the quality of laboratory results.
- The course offers training on simulators and hands on training with professionals.
- Students will earn patient indications for IV placement, needle selections, types of IV fluids, priming the IV fluid, orders, IV drip rates and calculations, contraindications for IV, troubleshooting difficult venipunctures and proper documentation.
- Each student will get training on blood Simulated manikins for practicing technique and accuracy. Each student must pass Final exam with a rate of 85% or higher.
- Each student will perform 3 Live IV starts on fellow participant or volunteer of their choice
- Each student must complete a minimum of three in-person individually supervised successful venipunctures or IV Starts and three individually supervised skin punctures (capillary blood withdrawal) on live human subjects. The standard completion time for this course is 4 days or within one week, excluding any holidays and vacation times.

accreditation by the Accrediting Bureau of Health Education Schools (ABHES). ABHES
accreditation does not include continuing education courses.

Course Fees
- $ 375.00, a seat reservation fee of $100 is required during registration.
- State mandated licensing fee of $50.00 in money order or cashier check (effective September 21st 2022) address to the BVNPT is required for licensing issuance at the completion of this course.
Course Registration
Before registration, applicants must meet the following admission criteria:
Provide valid photo identification
- Provide proof of one of the following:
(a) A current and valid California LVN license.
(b) Senior standing in a CA VN Program with successful completion of Module IV.
(c) A graduate of a California Vocational Nurse program. o Interim Permit status for California LVN licensure.
(d) Licensed RN (CA state).
(e) A licensed physician (CA state).

Course Completion Certificate
For Licensed Vocational Nurses (LVNs):
After course completion, the LVN who satisfactorily completes the course will receive a
certificate of completion from shekinah follow by BVNPT certificate which will be issued to
the candidates.
Continuing Education Certificate
- RNs, Licensed Physicians
These students complete the IV/BW course provided by Shekinah Allied Healthcare Safety and Training as a Continuing Education course and should receive Continuing Education
Certificates only, including Shekinah Allied Healthcare Safety and Training’ continuing
education course approval number.
- NON-LICENSED
Seniors in good academic standing may also complete the course; however, they must
abide by he following requirement as set forth by BVNPT (please see Certification for
LVNs Provider Guidelines California Code of Regulations, Section G. Reminders point 9).
- Should licensure be obtained after course completion, it is the student’s responsibility to contact the provider upon receipt of licensure and request submission of the required certificate to the Board.
Course Refund and Cancellation/course attendance Policy
- You have the right to cancel your course of instruction; however, the Seat Reservation Fee is non-refundable and will be retained after registration. When calculating the cancellation refund amount, we use the following formula: Total Amount Paid — Seat Reservation Fee.
- To cancel the course, the student must provide written notice of cancellation. Cancellation can be made by mail, email, or hand delivery. The written notice of cancellation, if sent by mail, is sufficient when deposited in the mail properly addressed (to Admission Advisor) with the proper postage. The written notice of cancellation need not take any particular form and, however, expressed, it is valid if it shows that the student no longer wishes to attend the course.
- You have the right to withdraw from the course at any time, and you have the right to receive a pro-rata refund if you have completed 60 percent or less of the scheduled days through the last day of attendance. When calculating the prorated refund amount, we use the following formula: Total Amount Paid — STRF — Seat Reservation Fee — (Hourly Tuition Cost) x (Number of hours attended)
- Hourly Tuition Cost = Tuition / (Total Hours in the course).
- Shekinah Allied Healthcare Safety and Training cancels the course, students will be notified about the upcoming schedule and automatically receive reassignment to the next available class. If there is a scheduling conflict, the student is responsible for opting out of the next course. To opt-out and receive a full refund, the student must submit a written cancellation notice. Please state the reason for the Shekinah Allied Healthcare Safety and Training’ cancellation and schedule conflict.
